Things being what they are (....can't start to talk about work, it's Sunday....) my time in November will be constrained. Also, the format of NaNoWriMo is no longer useful for me. However, I will be trying to open a document and do some writing or revising on every day in November. I think that's a commitment I can keep without panicking and looking for the next ship off this rock.
My own pimpage: I'm going to do picowrimo again. For Picowrimo, you set your own goals -- any goal at all -- and work as suits you best. There's a supportive comm that's doing the same thing, with daily check-in posts.
I did this last year, although I only managed to participate for half the month. Something about quitting my job and loading all my possessions into boxes and moving 4000 miles kind of did me in. However: I wrote more with Picowrimo than I would have without it.
People might like to consider mininano - which I've done several years in a row. You can set a daily word goal - I usually say 100 words, and then outstrip that goal, but it's pretty unpressurised. And the comm's very friendly.
Hmmm looking here I might check out picowrimo as well. I've "won" NNWM for three or four years in a row now, but this year I have an actual novel that I'm trying to properly revise. I feel guilty at the idea of setting that aside just to pull 50k out of my ass in 30 days, so I was thinking of doing a personal goal of just getting my novel completely revised and into 2nd/3rd draft stage by the end of the month.
I am actually doing Official NaNo. O_O (What can I say? I'm a sheep. Baaaa. Also I have a novel-size sort of story idea I've been wanting to do things with.)
I will also, because I am that sort of person, be ticking off people who are doing NaNoWriMo. ;P Probably.
I think this is what I'll be doing in November. Setting small wordcount goals and having a place to post about them sounds like what I need more than anything - well, except the knowledge that there are *other people* out there working on fic at the same time as well - something fic_rush, too, has helped me with in the past :)).
Both mini_nanowrimo and picowrimo will allow that; if you haven't yet, try looking at last year's comm discussions for both and see which atmosphere suits you. Mini is larger and more structured, Pico is smaller and less formal, and there are 'Rushers in both, so there's always a friendly face.
