Personally I don't see the point of NaNo - for me it'd be unproductive as it's entirely counter to the way I write. But that's just me (and I realise I'm in a tiny minority in thinking it's counter-productive).

I've got lots of friends who've done it too - but I cannot write and then not edit as I go...

I much prefer [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo - you can set yourself a daily word quota (minimum 100 words) and then write to that goal - but it's perfectly acceptable to edit it as you go, and the mods keep a running tally of everyone's word counts (you post at the end of the writing day with the word count you've completed that day). The first year I did it, I wrote a linked series of 30 ficlets (one a day) centring on Martha Jones. Had great fun doing it, too...

There's also [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo - I'm planning to do that this year. It's very informal: no sign-up deadlines, just set any writing-related goal for the month (finish this story, edit that story, write 500 words, write something every day) and chatter in the daily posts. The archives feel a lot like ours, if not quite so cracky... *g*

Ooh! Thanks for the tip - I hadn't heard of picowrimo!

I have never got any useful writing from my NaNo 'novels'. But it's useful in other ways. It's a good way to meet a bunch of other writers, and the write-ins and chatroom are really fun. Plus, the kick-off party has goody bags. And what kid-who's-outgrown-birthday-parties doesn't love an excuse for goody bags!

I'm not denying other people find it useful - far from it. Obviously they do or it wouldn't continue to run every year.
