Round Fred begins this evening! Unless you're east of the GMT time zone, in which case it begins very early tomorrow morning.

I've drawn up a table of anchor posts across the time zones where I know we have current Mod Squad members. It shows the US under Daylight Savings Time and Europe under standard time, as they are at present, and won't be next month and we'll worry about that then.

Arizona is in with PDT.

Mods, please lay claim to anchor posts in the comments.  Feel free to negotiate with/cajole/bribe one another if so inclined, just avoid bloodshed.  The ones in blue are key, although it would be nice to have all anchors in place. I will engage to start and end the round.

This is the annual update, even though it's been about a year and a half since the last time I did it. I'm not sure what planet I must be on, but obviously it has a different length of year.

If you are a mod, or have modded, or would like to mod, or just want to be well-modulated, please comment on this post and answer the following questions. Please give answers in your own time zone, or in GMT -- and tell me which you're using. Please ignore everyone else's schedule at this time: this is all about YOU. Because we're all special snowflakes. Except for Fred, who is a special hailstone.

Please reply even if you've told me this information before and nothing has changed. If I don't hear from you at all, I will take that to mean that you are no longer interested in modding and I'll cry. If you can't commit to a regular mod shift, but are interested in/willing to do occasional Stunt Mod shifts, please say so, but also answer the questions.

If you have never modded at all, or you've been an Emergency Stunt Mod, or a member of the Fic Rush Highly Irregulars, or a Master Usurper, or you modded in the past and took a break and would like to mod again, this is your chance! Crack a glowstick! Set off fireworks!  Dress up as a ninja!  Remember, mods get fame glory fat wads of cash Pretentious Titles!

The first draft of the new master schedule is under the cut.  Peruse intently and let me know your thoughts on your shift(s).  Some shifts are very different from previous incarnations, others are not.  If you aren't on the schedule at all, it's probably because I didn't hear back from you when I asked for updates on modding preferences.

In addition to the assigned shifts in the schedule, thanks to the truly lovely offers of several new people, we now have a cadre of Fic Rush Irregulars.  In particular, we have the Fic Rush Somewhat Irregulars (FRSI), who mod on most weekends but whose shifts are subject to, well, shifting, and the Fic Rush Completely Irregulars (FRCI), who do not currently have regular assigned shifts, and who I hope will be able to fill in as needed, both for scheduled shifts and for Emergency Stunt Modding.  If you're in either band of Irregulars, please let me know before each round if you're going to be available, and when, so I'll know if I can call on you.

I also have two 3-hour shifts that don't currently have anyone assigned to them.  If you're interested in either of these, do speak up!

Currently up for grabs:

Hour 16 through Hour 18
Saturday, starts at: 3 pm GMT, 10 am EST, 7 am PST

Hour 40 through Hour 42
Sunday, starts at: 3 pm GMT, 10 am EST, 7 am PST

It's time, based on my entirely obscure Gaxian almanac, for me to update the Master Modding Schedule and ask Many Nosy Questions about time zones and availability.

If you are a mod, or have modded, or would like to mod, or believe it's a mod mod mod mod world, please answer the following questions.  You can give answers in your own time zone, or in GMT -- just tell me which you're using.  Please ignore everyone else's schedule at this time:  this is all about YOU.

Also, even if you've told me this information before, please reply.  If I don't hear from you at all, I will probably assume you are no longer interested in modding.

- Out of our usual 48 hours, what hours are you NOT EVER available to mod?  (Due to sleeping, regular commitments, etc.)

- Out of our usual 48 hours, what hours are the VERY VERY BEST for you to mod?

- If your schedule is in mad flux, but you're interested anyway, what's your best guess?

- Are you more comfortable with having a set, regular shift that's pretty much the same each weekend, or are you happier with a variable shift, or are you only interested in (or able to commit to) providing occasional emergency coverage?

- Is there a minimum or maximum amount of time that you're comfortable modding?

- Is there anything else I should know about your life that has bearing on this?  (for example:  you're a student and your schedule goes through periodic reshuffling; you're about to move to Australia and start a new job on the night shift; you're an alien with three months left of your holiday here, after which there will be a serious time lag on your internet connection due to relativistic time compression)

- For extra credit, use 'penguin' in a sentence.  Creativity counts.

Round 18 will probably be the 18th and 19th of June.  However:

One of our regular Mod Squad members, [livejournal.com profile] lullabymoon, is not available in June at all.  She regularly takes the shift from Sunday 9 am GMT to 1 pm GMT.  Is there anyone who would like to pinch-hit?

I would especially welcome new mods -- if we have more people in the pool, the existing mods are less likely to get burned out, yaknowwhatImean?

Although the mod is often the Chief Crackmeister of the Hour, this is not actually a requirement of the position.  If you're a writer not a stand-up comedian (Damn it Jim!) and you've been hesitating to offer on this account, please, hesitate no longer!

ETA:  If you're interested in modding, I will ask for the following information:

- your time zone (That's a big part of how I manage the calendar)
- your general preferences and limitations (Do you work till 5 on Friday?  Go to church on Sunday?  On Saturday?  Sleep in till noon?  Get to bed by midnight?  Stay up till 2 am on weekends?)
- your specific preferences (Are you always online on Sunday afternoon?  Usually bored on Saturday morning?)

Unless otherwise specified, I will begin by assuming that you are not available between 1 am and 9 am in your own timezone, that you work till 5 pm on Friday, and that you do not work on Saturday or Sunday; so I really want to know if those assumptions don't hold.

Also, none of this is ever set in stone; you will never get flack from me when your availibility changes.

If you're not a moderator and you're interested in helping, please ping me; I'm always interested in you.  Be sure to tell me what time zone you're in, and when you're likely to be available.  With summer approaching (in the Northern hemisphere, that is), we'll need Emergency Back-up Stunt Mods; and we could still use a second mod in Australia (or Japan or China or Malaysia . . . ) (or one with really bad insomnia).

And if you haven't yet voted on the dates for the May round, why the heck not?

ETA:  I think I have all the glitches fixed now, but please flag me if I missed any.

FAQs (aka Come to the Rush Side, We Have Cookies)

[Heavily revised, since it's been five years since the last FAQ update!]

[livejournal.com profile] fic_rush is a two-day, multi-fandom ficathon. Unlike other ficathons, there are no claims, prompts, or deadlines. There's just a two-day magic place where you spend as much of your time as possible writing. It is literally a ficathon: a fanfiction marathon.

Here's how it works. Each month, we post a poll to decide when the ‘Rush weekend will be. Each month, on that weekend, we hold the 'Rush, running from midnight to midnight GMT.  Every hour on the hour, for two days, the mod posts a check-in post: this happens in our sister comm, [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush_48 (to avoid flist-flooding). Participants check in by commenting on the most recent hourly post.

You can post anything and everything about what you're writing right then: what you accomplished last hour, goals for the next hour, what your fic is, how bad a caffeine headache you've got, problems you've hit, encouragement, anything. You spend the first few minutes of your hour replying and conversing there, then you spend the rest of the hour writing. We do a lot of mutual encouragement and commiseration, and exchange a lot of bad jokes and silly energy.

Two whole days? I have a job, five kids, and a clinical need for at least six hours of sleep a night!

The ficathon runs for 48 hours. You don't have to participate for 48 hours. You're free to start and finish at any time, and hop in and out of the hourly posts as needed. Just be here for as long as you can, as often as you can. If you can stay up for two days, that's great!  Try not to go blind. If you can only be around for an evening, we'd love to have you for that time.

That said, it's a ficathon. You're encouraged to give as much time to writing as you can, for this one weekend a month. Most of us spend a lot of time doing stuff for others: this time is for ourselves and each other.
