Novelize the video game.

Really. I am much in favor of novelizing obscure fandoms (and not-so-obscure ones, even.) I'm working very slowly on novzats (that's novelizations) for a '90s TV show called Legend which has about five fans and 2.5 published fics. (Which is ridiculous, because it is basically MACGYVER AND Q TEAM UP TO FIGHT CRIME, people! Sorry, got a bit excited there.)

Actually, Legend has a pretty sizable stealth fandom.

Where? All I know is that Lothi and eponymous_rose have written for it, I am trying to write for it, Primsong squees over it, and there used to be a fic by someone else somewhere on Geocities.

Of course, my Google-fu is pretty much nonexistent when it comes to fannish things...

As I said, it's a stealth fandom, mostly embedded inside RDA fandom. There's no strong centralised online presence, but at each of RDA's (admittedly few) con appearances, every time Legend is mentioned, there are many squees from the roomful. The RDA-related sites have Legend sections. I'm not sure how many Legend fans come from the JdL side, but there were plenty of cheers when I brought up Legend at Gatecon, at the panel that included JdL.

Moreover, the series gets occasional mentions and high marks from people who are outside the usual fannish world: it was reviewed (enthusiastically) on a site that covers old TV shows, and touted as One of the Great Shows That Should Not Have Been Cancelled and Should Be Released on DVD NOAW PLS.

The rise to prominence of steampunk is also a factor. Seriously, if Paramount would release the damned thing to DVD, they'd find a decent market.

Well now I'm torn again. I mean, I was going to be both a bit unfaithful in my novelization (the plot is occasionally centered around boss fights and fetch quests, though it really is quite good overall) and write as though nobody reading has played the game, so it could find an audience. And I'd like to think some people will buy/revisit the game as a result. At least it's currently available (for cheap! DRM free! Runs on almost any system!), which it sounds like your fandom isn't.

Oh, and did I mention it's vaguely steampunk? Yeah. But made before steampunk was cool, as all good steampunk things were.

*ahem*

So anyway, clearly I need a third voter because I can't make decision when you guys are tied.

I can't really help, because my answer is: "Which do you want more, happy readers or writing practice?" Or that's what my answer should be. My actual opinion is that Nano is likely to go better if you're excited by your idea, and it sounds as if you're more excited by the Who fic. (And pffft to later series canon.)

I am equally excited by both ideas and would get decent practice out of both, probably. I mean, I rejected the ideas that I'm not excited about, like the guy with the countdown in his head and my one epic FF8 fic that I started three years ago and abandoned. (Which, come to think of it, is also time travel horror. wtf, self?)
